Comenius project “Sing, dance and be merry: diversity of cultures unites us”

A week before Christmas is a special one in our school as there are a lot of events organized to celebrate it. This year we organized a Christmas crafts exhibition in which actively participated both primary and secondary students, their family members and teachers.

Meeting in Lithuania: September 2011

 

September 2011 started with exciting uproar both in Lithuania with European basketball championship and in Domeikava village, Kaunas region with lively and enthusiastic meeting of students and teachers from three Comenius project “Sing, dance and be merry; diversity of cultures unites us” countries Bulgaria, Turkey and Lithuania. It was the second meeting in Lithuania and the participants from Bulgaria, Turkey and Lithuania presented some of the project products and outcomes including traditional festivals, customs and traditions,

Lithuanian GANDRINĖS

 

A day, similar to Baba Marta, is called Gandrinės in Lithuania. It is celebrated on 25 March since approximately this day is coincides with the return of storks.  
It is believed that for the first time seen a stork can be very significant for the whole year. If you first see the stork flying it means good luck. If you first see the stork sitting, you will be slow all this year.
During the lessons of Ethnic Culture, Lithuanian, Crafts, History and German students are introduced to the celebration as well as the celebration mentioned above.

Meeting in Kaunas in September 2010

 

The first teachers’ meeting of the international Comenius project “Sing, dance and be merry” took place in Domeikava gymnasium, Kaunas Region, Lithuania, September 24-29, 2010. During the meeting teachers from Turkey, Bulgaria and Lithuania specified the dates of the meetings as well as the activities scheduled by the participants in the application form and had some social and cultural activities.

BABA MARTA

 

Baba Marta celebration was inspired by the teachers’ and students’ meeting in Bulgaria. We celebrated it in our gymnasium on the first of March, 2010. After the meeting our students and teachers decided that Bulgarians and Lithuanians have some similar traditions. The other students of the gymnasium were introduced Baba Marta holiday and were encouraged to weave wrist bands (Martenitsa) combining red and white colored threads which were worn around wrists that day and through March. Later, when a stork was seen the students hang the wrist bands on the tree branches in the school garden.
